Measuring productivity is a real challenge for SMBs, and the assumption here will be that you do little of this if any. This is totally understandable, but metrics aside, you can generally tell when employees are being productive, and you most likely value productivity to make the business more successful.

While IT is not usually tasked with managing employee productivity, there is an opportunity with VoIP if you believe that communications is a key driver here. With today’s technology, that is absolutely true, but businesses have varying degrees of success taking advantage of what’s available.

This largely depends on whether you view communications as a cost or an investment, as well as whether it has tactical or strategic value. In a legacy world, your job is done so long as you keep the phone system operating. Once employees have dial tone, there’s not much else to worry about.

If that’s your thinking, then you’re out of step with the world of Internet-based communication. You certainly know how the Web has become indispensable for all forms of work, but it has also become the hub of communications. This role was solidly held by your phone systems for decades, simply because voice ruled.
