The Medical Mutual Pillar Award for Community Service, presented by Smart Business, honors businesses of all types and sizes that make outstanding contributions to their community. Its purpose is to encourage a charitable environment, recognize creative efforts that make a difference and demonstrate the ties between the for-profit and nonprofit worlds.

In addition to ongoing community outreach, Goodwin has been active on the Dress for Success Cincinnati Board. Dress for Success Cincinnati promotes the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support, and career development tools to help them thrive in work and life.

30-Second Q&A with David Goodwin:

What do you consider your most important community leadership accomplishment?  Why?

“It’s difficult to single out a particular accomplishment. I see outreach as an ongoing initiative. Therefore, it is the body of work and evolving diversity of my outreach that I consider most important. Although the past year has been a record business year, what has been monumental, and what I am most proud of, is my continued community support and outreach.”

(Goodwin contributes time, and that of his family and employees, as well as financial resources to approximately 16 different community organizations and nonprofits. In the last year, his family and employees have volunteered for organizations such as Dress for Success Cincinnati and Matthew 25: Ministries.)

“In addition to Dress for Success and Matthew 25, I enjoy assisting numerous other organizations including CityLink, Wounded Warrior Project, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, Shriners Hospitals for Children, and Susan G. Komen for the Cure. These are organizations that I feel connected to through personal ties, respect, duty, and/or admiration.”

How do you view leadership and its role in the community?

“Leadership is a journey for continuous improvement and expansion. Over the years, I have expanded my leadership beyond my business and family and into the community. I have gotten great satisfaction by conducting community outreach with varied organizations—organizations that benefit and improve life for different segments of the local population.”
